AUTHOR / EX TENNIS PRO / SKATEBOARDER

Pat Flynn's first Young Adult novel, ALEX JACKSON: GROMMET, was launched in July, 2001, at the Voices on the Coast Youth Literature festival. It was followed by ALEX JACKSON: SWA in 2002 and ALEX JACKSON: CLOSING OUT in 2003. The ex-professional tennis player and teacher has since received rave reviews for his witty take on adolescent life.

The Midwest Book Review in the United States calls ALEX JACKSON: GROMMET "a superbly written novel for teens. [It] is recommended as being an engagingly, deftly written story about handling common teenage trials." The School Library Journal of America says that ALEX JACKSON: SWA "will fly off the shelf because the characters are real people, the setting and situations are authentic, and the plot moves quickly," while the Melbourne Age says that ALEX JACKSON: CLOSING OUT is a "thoroughly enjoyable, unpatronising exercise in giving teenage boys what they want: sex and success."

Flynn grew up in Jimboomba, Queensland, before moving to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for 3-years on a tennis scholarship. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor of Journalism with Honours. For the rest of the 1990s, Flynn played on the Professional tennis circuit, was State Tennis Coach of South Australia, and penned the occasional article for magazines.

After becoming a teacher, Flynn's observations of young people - their interests and stories - led to the ALEX JACKSON series. The books follow the adventures of a teenage skateboarder as he navigates the pitfalls of adolescence, including peer pressure, fights, and his first love. ALEX JACKSON: DROPPING IN, a prequel to the AJ series, was launched at the 2004 SLAQ Conference.

TO THE LIGHT was published in August 2005, and is shortlisted for the 2006 CBC Book of the Year: Younger Readers!

This year, Pat has published two novels. THE LINE FORMATION follows Rugby League fan, Ozzie, from Queensland to Texas and onto the gridiron field. THE MAL RIDER is a Penguin Aussie Chomp.

Flynn now lives on the Sunshine Coast, surfs, skates and plays the occasional game of tennis in his spare time. He has spoken and conducted workshops at many literature festivals, schools and libraries over the past two years. His talks for students include: Writing is like Skateboarding and Write Right, and his workshop is titled: Funny Writing. Flynn also speaks and conducts workshops for adults.
