POET / MONOLOGIST / ACTOR

Terry was born in Swan Hill, Victoria, and grew up for the most part in St Joseph's Home, a Ballarat orphanage. He recently returned to the orphanage to write and record several monologues for "Life Matters" Radio National. He has lived overseas in New York, where he studied acting for two years at the Herbert Berghof Studio and the Stella Adler Conservatory.

Terry has worked as a Teacher, Dramaturg, Festival Director (Emerging Writers' Festival 2005) and as Writer-in-Community for the City of Boroondara. He has been published widely both in Australia and overseas. His first volume of poetry, BUOY, was published in 2001 by Five Islands Press, and was highly commended in The Anne Elder Award by the Fellowship of Australian Writers.

His poetry has also been anthologised in NEW MUSIC: AN ANTHOLOGY OF CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN POETRY, alongside major Australian poets such as, Les Murray, Bruce Dawe and Dorothy Porter. Terry is in great demand as a reader/performer of his own work and others, reading regularly at local and interstate festivals. Terry was on the winning team of the Melbourne Writers' Festival "Babble" Poetry Slam 2004 and winner of the Victorian Writers' Centre Poetry Cup 2004. Recently he returned from a four month stint in Singapore writing and reading new work. He is more than able to enagage and hold an audience. His readings are known for their high standard of performance and emotive qualities.

Presentations include workshops on the craft of writing generally or poetry specifically. His orphanage monologues are a great illustration of writing in the confessional mode and/or "life" writing and are used to that end in a workshop scenario.

"It is undoubtedly a tough gig to engage Year 8 students within a 100 minute session, however Terry's unassuming, yet engaging style won the students over. They responded well and produced some excellent poetry of their own. We would be more than happy to have him back again."
- Paul Matton, Penola Catholic College.

"In a school where writing and poetry are not a part of the dominant culture, Terry created real interest in these crafts. His connection with the real world of poets in Melbourne was of great interest to the students and his ability to make poetry come alive in his performances astonished and moved both staff and students."
- Angela Ginnivan, Kerang Technical High School

"Terry has an interested and engaging personality and a natural ability to help others locate and focus their own creative impulse."
- Ken Smeaton, Boroondara LitFest Co-ordinator
