This was made into a five part documentary series called
IF IT DOESN'T KILL YOU that
was shown nationally on Australian television in June/July
1999 and later broadcasted in several European countries.
Peter
has worked as a tree surgeon, has initiated and run
youth theatre projects and for 5 years was the Boonerwrung
Coordinator for Melbourne Waterwatch - a schools and
community based water monitoring program -which he helped
expand to its current status in Melbourne.
2001-2004
Peter was Project Director of INSPIRE!
founded by Robert Swan, OBE, the first person to walk
to both Poles. During this time Peter ran selection
programs, helped organise and then co-led 4 Expeditions
with INSPIRE! -3 to Antarctica
and one to the World Summit in Johannesburg in 2002.
On the first Antarctic Expedition the Team along with
Russian Base personnel, removed 1000 tonnes of rubbish
out of Bellingshausen Base on King George Island. On
two Corporate Expeditions the team visited a number
of sites around the Antarctic Peninsula doing Personal
Leadership and Teamwork development programs, before
in 2003 experiencing hurricane force winds and seas
in the Drake Passage, on the way home.
Peter
now works part-time as an Expedition Leader for Aurora
Expeditions which he has done for a number of seasons
in the Antarctic Peninsula, onboard their Russian crewed
eco-tourist ice class ships. This year Peter will be
EL and back-up helicopter pilot on a 25-day expedition
into the Ross Sea, below NZ, with Aurora's new ship,
together with helicopter support.
Peter
is also part of a syndicate that has launched a 19-metre
catamaran Pelican 1 in the Melbourne Docklands. This
is used exclusively for marine education and social/environmental/youth
projects, combined at times with corporate development
work. The Patron of Pelican Expeditions is comedian
and interviewer Andrew Denton and recently Peter and
the Pelican team did a 14-day Aboriginal youth Project
with Hope Vale Community in the Far North of Queensland.
During this project, sponsored by the ANZ, the team
took 135 Guugu Yimidhirr people sailing on a series
of mini-expeditions amongst their traditional tribal
coastal lands (see The Sunday Magazine article from 30 Oct 2005 here).
Peter
also runs Rites of Passage programs for fathers and
sons (his wife actress Davini Malcolm does mothers and
daughters) both with the harm prevention charity Pathways
Foundation and with Peter's own group Orca Expeditions.
Peter
is a sought after inspirational speaker in schools and
in the corporate arena. Being a Dad to four boys and
one girl (including twins) is his primary role in life,
and boating, sailing, adventure, culture, playing music
and social change are Peter's main interests.

"Thank you for giving up your time to talk to us about your many experiences around Antarctica. We loved how you came in your Antarctic outfit to show us what it is really like. Your photos also showed us what it is really like in Antarctica. When we are older we wish to be just like you and visit Antarctica."
- Students from Park Ridge Primary School.
"Once
again, thank you very much for coming to speak to the
students. The feedback from the students was extremely
positive. I was a passionate and inspiring presentation,
supported by relevant scientific evidence and lots of
great stories. I was also very impressed by your ability
to tailor your presentation to the needs of my students.
I am sure that you will have inspired many of them to
both envision and enact positive social change in their
future work and personal lives."
-Ben Neville, Faculty of Economics
and Commerce, University of Melbourne
"Fantastic,
well prepared, great slide show - very knowledgeable.
Great links between history, geography, environment
and inspiration. The students were engaged and the staff
were impressed!"
-
Kerry Sidaway, Western Heights College
"Very
impressed! Peter was enthusiastic and informative and
our students responded well to his presentation."
-
Bernice Ryan, Our Lady of Mercy College
"Peter's
visit has generated the most positive discussion by
students and staff we have experienced ever after a
visiting speaker. One student commented "I thought
it was going to be boring, but it wasn't - it was great'."
