POET

Leanne Hills reads and performs her work wherever people will listen: in boardrooms, galleries, pubs, libraries, and festivals; on radio and under trees.

Her writing ranges from poetry to plays, and has been published, performed, awarded and translated in a variety of countries. Recent publications include Going Down Swinging, Frog Pond (US), Famous Reporter and Overland.

As co-editor and co-initiator of the poetry section of Moving Galleries - a poetry and art project released on Melbourne’s trains in 2006 - Leanne believes in reminding people that poetry is a living art form. The haiku/rooku displayed on Moving Galleries is chosen entirely from public submissions, and children are amongst the poets included.

Given to wandering, Leanne has taught English to the Russian mafia, scaled glaciers in Africa, tutored small barons in a French château, and crossed the Sahara on a motorbike. In quieter moments, she has worked as a language and creative writing teacher both in Australia and overseas.

Leanne is currently writing, and translating into French, a dance libretto and poetry for a production, which will be performed in Switzerland in 2007. She is also leading a project to create a poet laureateship for the state of Victoria.

Offering workshops on poetic forms, creating poetry for public spaces, voice, haiku and short form poetry, among others, Leanne enjoys working with students of all ages.

“We found the time Leanne spent with us inspiring and imaginative, and the ideas she discussed were very helpful to students in the creation of their own work. We’d be happy to have her back!”
- Gail McIntyre, Kallista Primary School
