EDUCATION CONSULTANT

Paul Dillon has a unique investment in the wellbeing of young people. Founder of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia and a former school teacher, Paul continues to conduct drug information sessions and workshops for school students across Australia.

Paul works internationally in countries as diverse as the UK, the Phillipines and Indonesia, presenting workshops and training seminars to school staff, parents and youth workers on perforance/image enhancing drugs, methamphetamine use and drug prevention.

In the lead-up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Paul worked with the Australian Institute of Sport to develop training programs for the coaches of elite athletes on the importance of responsible partying. Since then, he has continued this training for a number of national sporting organisations, including the Australian Cricketers’ Association, the Rugby Union Players’ Association and Football Federation Australia. He has also assisted in developing alcohol policies for the sports themselves.

During his career in Drug Education, Paul has served as Project Officer for the ‘SpeedWise SpeedSafe’ campaign; wrote the instruction manual for the NSW Police Services on alcohol and violence; and was also Project Officer for the
‘Stay in Control’ campaign, which targeted teenage binge drinking. He has been involved in the interviewing of key informants for the World Health Organisation Cocaine Study as well as the National Survey of Ecstasy and Other Party Drugs. In addition, Paul been a consultant for the United Nations where he developed and trialed a UNODC Global Youth Training Workshop preventing amphetamine type stimulants among young people.

Paul facilitates whole-school community programs whereby he presents to:

- Students: Year 10 and above

- Teachers: primary and secondary

- Parents

Student presentations deal with the delivery of basic life skills, examining some of the harms associated with the use of alcohol and other drug use and then some simple tips on how to look after themselves and their friends. Student sessions should have an interactive component and Paul provides some simple activities to schools that can be conducted along with the presentation or during follow-up sessions.

Teacher presentations can be tailored to suit the audience and the time available. Sessions can be delivered during 'pupil-free days' and last for a number of hours, or be fitted into a staff meeting time-slot.

The delivery of high quality and accurate alcohol and other drug information to parents is essential if a community-based approach to drug education is to be adopted by the school. Paul's parent information sessions cover a range of issues, including resilience and the importance of connectedness. They accentuate positive norms and aim to empower parents in this controversial area.
