WRITER / ADVENTURER / STORYTELLER

Michele is an adventurer, author and a storyteller. She inspires others by reflecting on her own journey—a road less travelled. Michele left the corporate world to venture into war and its aftermath working in the aid and development industry. She then became a workshop facilitator and a writer who collaborates with artists, photographers and documentary makers.

Her first book, 700 Days in El Salvador, was released in 2006. It is an autobiographical account of her journey in the late 1980s and the 1990s from Australia to El Salvador. The narrative moves from civil war to post-war reconstruction and the healing of devastated communities. According to Jo Case, Deputy Editor of Australian Book Review, 700 Days in El Salvador was one of the Best Books of 2006.

Michele’s feature articles have appeared in The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, The Courier Mail, and a variety of Australian magazines, and range from international issues to travel writing.

Michele is a dynamic speaker who, over the last 15 years, has spoken to audiences in Australia and the USA, captivating them with her stories. Whether speaking about ‘The Road Less Travelled—living with integrity, inspiration and imagination’, ‘Finding Direction in Life’, ‘Social Justice’, or ‘Writing’, Michele draws on experiences which speak to professionals, students and the wider community. She has spoken at conferences, dinners, professional development days, to staff and students at secondary schools, and to the business community.

For secondary schools, Michele offers 50-minute keynote talks for staff professional development and for students, as well as a writer-in-residence program. The latter can be tailored to individual school needs, and may begin with one day per term for the year.

According to Martin Flanagan, author and journalist:
"Michele is a woman of rare courage and achievement and more Australians would benefit from hearing her story, parts of which I have told in the Age newspaper on two occasions."
