GENERAL PRACTITIONER
Specialising in Young People's Health

Dr Leanne Rowe was the Founding Director of Clockwork Young People's Health Service in Geelong. The Clockwork Program promotes the accessibility, relevance and quality of health care for young people, by offering direct provision of a range of holistic health care service in Geelong. The established Clockwork drop-in centre, serviced by a multidisciplinary team, currently see over 200 young disadvantaged people each week.

For her work on the Program, Dr Rowe was awarded 1997's "Best Individual Contribution to Health Care in Australia" by the Australian Medical Assocation.

Out of the Clockwork Program, Dr. Rowe developed a novel entitled, girl_X Recreated (Random House), co-authored and illustrated by herself and a team of Geelong youths. In the format of a girl's personal diary, the novel takes an affirmative look at the often destructive role of drugs, depression, eating disorders, sexuality, relationships with parents and friends, terrorism and war can have on adolescents. Dr. Rowe and her team of young authors approached these problems through communication and trust, finding the strength to tackle these issues directly.

At the end of her difficult year, Girl X, sends her diary to the world via the internet as a message of hope and asks if anyone is listening. The response from people of all ages is extraordinary. But the most remarkable response comes from a boy living in year 3002 who finds a way to communicate with Girl X. His questions about our time challenge the reader to respond to the book via a website - www.girlx.com.au - and to contribute to the sequel. This site also includes curriculum materials to assist teachers raise health and social issues in creative and innovative ways.

Dr Rowe has been a Senior lecturer at Melbourne University's Department of General Practice and Public Health and Monash University's Department of Psychological Medicine. She is currently undertaking a Doctorate of Medicine in the area of adolescent depression.
