ILLUSTRATOR

Ron Brooks was born in Gippsland, Victoria. Moving in his mid-teens to Melbourne, he studied at Swinburne University and later RMIT majoring in illustration. Dabbling in freelance illustration, graphic design, copywriting and teaching, but increasingly active as an illustrator over a range of publishing projects for children. His first picture books have been popular with several generations of children .

Brook’s first full-scale picture book was THE BUNYIP OF BERKELEY’S CREEK by Jenny Wagner, which won the Childrens’ Book Council Book of the Year Award in 1974.

There followed ARANEA, also by Jenny Wagner and Brooks’ own ANNIE’S RAINBOW in 1975.

JOHN BROWN , ROSE AND THE MIDNIGHT CAT, again by Jenny Wagner won the Childrens’ Book Council Picture Book of the Year award in 1978, the Visual Arts Board Award and the New South Wales Premier’s Award.

For a long period Ron has alternated between freelancing in advertising, teaching drawing ,and his earlier love of painting and printmaking .He collaborated with the Japanese artist Mitsumasa Anno on the book ALL IN A DAY in 1986

Ron continued his freelance and consultancy work with the Australian Childrens Television Association and then travelled to London andfor a time lived with his family in New York .

His most recent publications have been a series of subtle beautiful books written by Margaret Wild.

These tender picture books have been acclaimed in many countries for their apparently simple stories which are able to explore the deepest emotions. The first of these was OLD PIG a touching story of how to say goodbye. ROSIE AND TORTOISE published in 1998 is a perfect book about how to say hello.

2000 saw the publication of the award-winning and hugely popular FOX - a mythical tale of love, friendship and betrayal.

Teachers, librarians and children of all ages find great depth and tenderness in these books and are delighted to have Ron visit and discuss how the books evolved.
