ILLUSTRATOR

David Lovegrove started his art career in Brisbane in 1987 working in art supplies and studying drawing and painting part time. In 1994 he moved to Sydney to study full-time at the famous Julian Ashton Art School, graduating with the school's Diploma in 1997 and the
Henry Gibbons Drawing Prize. He was also a major part of the Australian self published comic book scene and was a guest lecturer at OZCON 97 Sydney.

Since then David has held numerous group and solo exhibitions as an artist. As a freelance illustrator, David works in publishing and as a concept artist in film and television. Most recently he created concept illustrations for Steven Speilberg's upcoming WW2 mini series The Pacific and for the Adam Sandler produced horror film The Ruins.

David is currently working on his own epic Japanese style manga series Daruma, and receives numerous commissions to paint "martial" artworks depicting ninja, samurai and kung fu masters (in his other life he is a keen kung fu student!). He began running workshops in figure drawing, painting, cartooning and comics, manga and concept art in the early 90's and he has a very enthusiastic following in schools and libraries around Australia. David has taught and mentored many hundreds of artists over the years including one of Australia's best mouth and foot painters Greg Moran.

His passion for Japanese culture and in particular Japanese comics led him to visit Japan this year to research his own manga and meet Japanese fans and academics. During Japan Week this year he was invited to run a day of workshops for the Japanese Consulate General of Australia, and these were a great success with young and adult
participants.

He continues to push the boundaries of his art and whilst remaining firmly committed to passing on the strong tradition of classical art. He also experiments with the new media of digital art, manga and 3D animation concept art.

"Since 2007 David Lovegrove has been presenting workshops at the Logan City Council Libraries including Manga, illustration, fantasy and science fiction art for children, young adults and adults as part of our school holiday programs, Sci Fi month and for National Youth Week programs.  David has an excellent rapport with young adults, children and families and his workshops are always interesting and informative.  David is a skilled artist and at the Manga workshops he was able to get the teens not only excited about Manga, but also about the Japanese language and culture. He always adds some extra depth via the way of extra content and information to his sessions to engage participants.  I found that David is also happy to adapt content to topics or genres needed.  For example he is presenting a Vampire and Werewolf workshop in the school holidays for our youth at Logan to coincide with the release of the new Twilight series movie NEW MOON."

"David spent 2 days at our school, motivating and inspiring over 600 students from Grade 1 to Grade 7. He demonstrated his creative talents with our students by involving them in each workshop. He really brought the graphic novel alive for students!
The students had a better understanding of how to read and appreciate the graphic novel. Many children very excitedly drew, designed and wrote comic strips for weeks after David's visit. Our students thoroughly enjoyed David's workshops, learning many techniques used by graphic and manga artists. David's visit celebrated the end of our 'Graphic Novel Unit'.

I would happily recommend David to other schools".
