ILLUSTRATOR / AUTHOR

.Terry Denton was born in Melbourne in 1950, the fourth of five boys (poor mother!) and endured an idyllic childhood living near the Yarra in Kew.

He studied Architecture before deciding tp persue an artistic career and tries painting, sculpture, theatre and animation before discovering illustration.

Since then he has illustrated more than twenty books, eight of which he has also written. In 1984 he wrote and illustrated Felix and Alexander which won the CBC Picture Book of the Year in 1986. Other books (and awards) include Mr Plunkett’s Pool (Multicultural Book of the Year, 1993), The Paw (CBC Honours Book, 1994), Duck for Cover (YABBA Winner, KOALA Winner and CBC shortlist, 1995), Spooner or Later (YABBA Winner, 1994), Zapt! (YABBA Winner, 1998) and Gasp! (KOALA Winner, 1996, and BILBY Winner, 1998).

Terry visits hundreds of schools every year, working with students to develop their own writing and drawing, and sometimes painting murals. In a typical school session he might look at developing characters using simple shapes and expressions, then using a sequence of drawings to expand into story writing using words and pictures. All illustrated with rough sketches, storyboards, dummies and finished drawings. Then a few questions and watercolour demonstrations to finish off.

"We were all thrilled! Terry engaged the attention of the children immediately and they were fascinated ‘till the end. Two of the group went straight back to class and put into practice everything they’d learned. An excellent presentation."
- Jenny Scott, Mossgiel Park Primary School

"Everyone loved Terry. He was fantastic and we wanted to keep him. He really inspired both the children and teachers. Great role model for boys with literacy."
- Marilynne Cleveland, Cobram Consolidated School
