Peter Goldsworthy grew up in various country towns, finishing his schooling in Darwin, the site of his first novel, Maestro. He graduated in medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1974 and devotes his time equally to medicine and writing.

Peter has published collections of poetry, including This Goes With That: Selected Poems 1970–1990 and If, Then; short fiction including Little Deaths; and several novels including Maestro, Honk If You Are Jesus, Wish, Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS), Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam and Three Dog Night.

He has written the libretto for the opera of Ray Lawler’s play, The Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. He has also written a graphic novel, Magpie, jointly with Brian Matthews. His most recent novel, Everything I Knew was published November 2008.

Since being published 20 years ago, Maestro has sold over 200,000 copies. It is a set text on Year 12 syllabuses in several states and is currently being adapted into a film.

Peter is also working on the stage-play adaptation with the State Theatre Company of South Australia. Maestro is also widely acclaimed in Austria and Germany.

In his talks, Peter will discuss his inspiration for Maestro, its themes and characters, and of course there will be plenty of time for questions.
