Morris' talks

Morris is one of Australia’s most successful authors. He was born in England and emigrated to Australia in 1969 so he could escape from school and become a Very Famous Writer.

Before realising that dream, he had a colourful career as a paperboy, department store Santa Claus and chicken defroster, among other things. In between he managed to gain a degree in Professional Writing at the Canberra College of Advanced Education.

He began his career as scriptwriter of TV’s The Norman Gunston Show, and went on to write a number of feature film screenplays and telemovies, including THE OTHER FACTS OF LIFE and SECOND CHILDHOOD. His first two books were developed from these scripts.

His next book, TWO WEEKS WITH THE QUEEN, became an international best-seller and was adapted into a play which has had productions both nationally and internationally.

Morris’s other books include MISERY GUTS, WORRY WARTS, PUPPY FAT, BLABBER MOUTH, STICKY BEAK, WATER WINGS, BELLY FLOP, WICKED! & DEADLY! (written in collaboration with Paul Jennings), BUMFACE, GIFT OF THE GAB, TOAD RAGE, ADULTS ONLY, TOAD HEAVEN,TEACHER'S PET, TOAD AWAY and WORM STORY.

BOY OVERBOARD and GIRL UNDERGROUND have been two of Morris' most loved novels. Following Jamal and Bibi, the soccer-living siblings from Afghanistan trying to make their way to Australia, both novels deal with the issues surrounding refugees, but with the same humour and accessibility of all Morris' novels.

His most recent best-sellers are ONCE, ARISTOTLE'S NOSTRIL and DOUBTING THOMAS.

His books have won many awards and have been published in the UK, the USA, Germany, Italy, Japan, France and Spain. For example, BUMFACE won the COOL Award in ACT, the BILBY Award in Queensland, the YABBA Award in Victoria, was shorlisted for the KOALA Award in NSW, and was voted number two in the Angus & Robertson Aussie Kids Top 100 Books of All Time! This is just the tip of the iceberg, with many of his books receiving similar awards.

New in 2008: THEN, the sequel to ONCE.

"THEN is the second story of Felix and Zelda. They escaped from the Nazis, but how long can they now survive when there are so many people ready to hand them over for a reward? Thanks to the courage of a kind, brave woman they are able to hide for a time in the open, but Felix knows he has a distinguishing feature that identifies him as a Jew and that it is only a matter of time before he is discovered, which will mean death for them all. Even though he promised Zelda he would never leave her, he knows he has to, before it is too late..."
