AUTHOR / POET

Mark Svendsen was born in Yeppoon in Central Queensland. He attended Emu Park Primary, Yeppoon Secondary and the University of Queensland in a self-described "highly undistinguished academic career". He was noticeable mainly by his absence.

He has worked at various jobs including as a farmhand on the family farm which involved crawling around on his hands and knees picking tomatoes, zucchini and beans; dressing up as though on an Antarctic expedition to pick pineapples in 40 degree heat; slaughtering cattle and avoiding taipans. Other work experience included courier driver, scallop loader, insurance clerk, waterbed salesman, University administrator and brush fencer/roofer. Phew!

In between those jobs, Mark has published several books, two of poetry and one novella for independent readers, Three Moon Lagoon (Greater Glider). His work is anthologized in many places, most recently in the Australian Association for the Teaching of English collection, The Girl Who Married A Fly.

His novel Snigger James On Grey was highly praised when it appeared in 2000 and was cited as a "Notable Book" in the CBC awards. It is a lyrical novel set in contemporary Australia but with many yarns of another, older Australia long gone , a place of farms and hard yakka. The observations of teenage life and teenage problems are wry and pointed and the awkwardness of friendships under pressure is well detailed.

Set in the Queensland of 1876, is an unsettling account of the disbursement of "troublesome blacks" by the Queensland Native Police. Titled Poison Under Their Lips, it is the story of Arthur Wilbraham, a young well educated and idealistic Christian who comes from South Australia to the new Colony of Queensland to help save the natives.

Rat Face and Snake-Eyes was a CBC Notable Book in 2004. A reward is offered for live pythons, used to eat the plague of rats. Snake-eyes and his gang become snake catchers. The gang uncover a smuggling operation and fight to have it exposed.

Circus Carnivore is a wonderful book full of nonsense prose guaranteed to delight young and old. It features beautiful illustrations by Ben Redlich.

His previous work was Shadow Snake published in mid-2004. It wasn't the boy's idea to go camping down the creek, but Pud's dad insisted. If only he had known what was out there and what fear the night would bring.

Mark's most recent work is the picture book Kestrel, illustrated by Steven Woolman & Laura Peterson.

Mark says: "Kestrel is based on a story Val told about his father and their next door neighbour, a young boy named Malcolm Jones. Malcolm wanted a dinghy to go crabbing and fishing in Gladstone harbour in Central Queensland. Malcolms father wouldnt let him have a boat and so Vals fathers subterfuge was born as he and Malcolm built the boat together in secret as a present, for a boy for his birthday."

Mark Svendsen specialises in workshops aimed at enhancing the teaching of writing narratives. These workshops guide teachers through a series of hands-on, classroom-level techniques aimed at ‘showing’ rather than ‘telling’ written narratives with particular emphasis on editing student work.

As the following testimonials attest, Mark’s Professional Development workshops are always very well received.

Participant feedback from, The ‘Power of Narrative’ literacy professional learning day Mackay, 2008

  • Mark was such a resource! So much knowledge.
  • Every teacher should have been here today.
  • I never really got ‘show don’t tell’ until Mark explained it. Thank-you!
  • A great day – left motivated and engaged to use the power of narrative.
  • Thanks Mark, I get it now.
  • Love the learning activities that you can try tomorrow!
  • More teachers needed to access this PD directly…
  • It’s great to have the opportunity to re-energise ideas (as well as reminding me of things I’ve used in the past and forgotten about).
  • Mark, very entertaining and great way to stretch out descriptions and add emotions
  • The day was well-planned and the speakers were informative and entertaining. I enjoyed the workshop ‘hands on’ with Mark Svendsen.
  • Wonderful! How do I get Mark to my school?

"Mark worked really well with the students, they were all engaged and enjoyed his sessions … we all took a lot away from the sessions."
- Megan Kings, Secondary Gifted Camp, Yeppoon, August 2008

Teacher PD Cairns & Peninsula Schools, 2008:

Just a quick email to let you know how wonderful Mark Svendsen was. He was terrific and just "struck the right note" with everyone. All the feedback has been very positive, both about the keynote speech, and the two workshops.

I'd really like to get him to come to our school for some student writing workshops next year…

Previous Feedback

"Every time author visits come up in class discussion, I thank you silently! Your initial author-in-residence 'stint' at our school created such a positive attitude in the students towards authors. It has meant a growing momentum of interest not only in authors, but in books,,, the students already show excitement at more author visits."
- Yvonne Kamholtz, Clinton State Primary School.

"Mark entertained all year levels with his stories and poems and demonstarted a good rapport with the students. All year levels involved are now inspired and are eagerly writing more poems - Thanks Mark, for your time and your enthusiasm."
- Megan Mackinney, Loganholme State School.
