AUTHOR / POET

Cate Kennedy brings a wealth of experience into the classroom - from time spent writing scripts for youth drama groups and directing their plays, to working in improvisational comedy workshops in London.

Her two years spent working in Mexico with Australian Volunteers International resulted in her first collection of poetry, SIGNS OF OTHER FIRES, which was published in 2001 and highly commended in the Victorian Premier's Awards.

The book went on to win the Vincent Buckley Poetry Prize in 2002, allowing her to travel to Ireland and plan a second collection, JOYFLIGHT, released in late 2004. In 2005 she released SING AND DON'T CRY; A MEXICAN JOURNAL, a non-fiction memoir, and in 2006 her short story collection DARK ROOTS was published through Scribe in Australia. It is scheduled for release in the U.S. and the U.K. in 2007.

She is highly regarded as a short story writer, and has many major prizes to her credit including winning The Age Short Story Competition (twice!), the HQ-Sceptre Short Story Award, and the University of Canberra Short Story Prize. Her stories have been widely anthologised in Australia and in September 2006, one appeared in The New Yorker magazine.

A fantastic writer-in-residence, Cate has taught at a selection of tertiary institutions, including the University of Melbourne, and frequently judges short story competitions for school students. She offers talks and workshops to secondary school students, particularly enjoying the chance to discuss story, narrative and character.

"Cate was terrifically flexible and vibrant, breathing life into our crisp winter mornings and cold fingertips. We would welcome her back anytime."
- Wayne Kelly, Shepparton H.S.

"Cate was an ideal writer in residence for our year 11-12 students. Challenging but affirming, she shared her own experience in an open and light way and had a responsiveness to their work which was very engaging."
- Prue Gill, MLC.

"One of most successful resident speakers, Cate was always interesting, intelligent, challenging and engaging. She had a natural understanding of what was required at each year level and was full of good ideas to engage students. Her poetry session and readings were fantastic."
- Ian Parr, Geelong Grammar School
