AUTHOR
|
| Brian
Caswell was born in Wales in 1954 and emigrated
to Australia at the age of twelve. After some success
in the music industry (one of his songs made the
Top 40), he started teaching and worked for fifteen
years in high schools in Sydneys south-west,
specialising in English, History and Creative Writing,
and indulging his love of basketball by coaching
the school teams. He is married with four children,
recently became a young grandfather, still coaches
the local basketball team and has an abiding interest
in things scientific. |

Teaching
English was, in a roundabout way, what got Brian
into writing. He found that many of the books
set for schools were no longer making an impression
on students. Brian has been an Australian author
of note since his first novel Merryll
of the Stones (1989), which received the
Honour Book CBCA Book of the Year Award for Older
Readers in 1990.

|
Some
of his best known and highly awarded books include
A Cage of Butterflies
(1992), Lisdalia
(1994), Maddie (1995),
Astarias (1996),
and the enormously popular Alien
Zones series (1998).

Recently
he co-authored Only The
Heart (1997) with David Phu
An Chiem which again has gathered various literary
awards (including Notable Australian Book CBCA
1998) and has been only the reading list for many
schools since.
Brians
work often deals with conflict and the abuse of
power, invasion in its various forms, and triumph
over adversity. His main strength lies in his
ability to create story and character. He is available
for school visits to talk about his work and take
creative writing workshops.
