AUTHOR / FORMER CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATOR

From horrific crime scenes to inspirational author, Esther Mckay has led an incredible life.

After 17 years service with the NSW Police Force, Esther embarked upon telling her moving and sometimes harrowing account of life as a young police woman in her autobiography CRIME SCENE: TRUE STORIES FROM THE LIFE OF A FORENSIC INVESTIGATOR.

Esther's powerful and unforgettable story takes us inside the life of a forensic investigator, and reveals as never before the extraordinary demands and dangers of forensic work.

As one of the first women in NSW to commit to forensic work she was determined to hold her own. With no formal training and inadequate equipment she soon found herself working alone and often unsupervised at deeply confronting crime scenes.

Esther in an engaging speaker who dispels the common myths of Crime Scene Investigation as portrayed in the popular TV programs such as CSI. 'It's what viewers can't see and smell that makes popular crime shows so enthralling'.

She describes her experiences in disaster victim identification at the Newcastle earthquake as well as the particular high profile disappearance of two young boys. With fascinating detail she gives a rare insight into both the emotional and physical demands of forensic work culminating in her eventual breakdown with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

She was medically discharged from the police force, hurt on duty, and ultimately began a remarkable journey to recovery. She speaks candidly about her struggle to overcome anxiety and depression, her life after trauma and the constant battle to live with the past.

Esther holds a Diploma of Applied Science in Forensic Investigation (NSW Police) and was awarded the National Medal for Service in 2001.

Esther encourages group discussions with Students studying Forensic Science on topics related to improvements in technologies over the past decade. She explains forensic concepts and the relationships with law.

She touches upon driver safety and the consequences of dangerous driving in young adults through her experiences at the scenes of road fatalities. She gives an honest account of both the emotional and physical demands of forensic work at university level forensic science.
