Antarctica is a very important place to us humans. It shows us how fragile our earth is - one footprint in a moss bed on this frozen land can last for 10 years, and just a few of it’s vast ice shelves, if they collapse into the sea from human induced global warming could commit the whole of our planet to a steady rise of sea level of several meters over a number of decades.

"Antarctica is the highest, coldest, windiest & driest place on earth - plus it is a place of great inspiration and a great example of global cooperation.

Forty five nations have signed and ratified (brought into law) the Antarctic Treaty which has been in place now for over 45 years. These are nations that have earnt the right to be part of this peaceful governing system. You can achieve this by running scientific research in Antarctica and it's off lying islands generally by building and running your own base or by sharing the use of a base with another nation. Member countries are classified into what's known as consultative or non-consultative members, depending on how much say they have in the running of the Treaty and it's associated legal systems.

Perhaps this is a template for how we could run the whole of earth unified as one to deal with global warming, inequality, poverty, and other global issues that need global unified solutions. A crucial part of the Antarctic Treaty is Article Four which does not recognise any territorial claims making Antarctica the one place on earth that is not owned by anyone....or maybe it is owned by nature and all of us together as one."

INTRODUCTION TO ANTARCTICA is based on Peter Malcolm's presentation which he has been delivering to schools, universities and organisations for several years. Following are a few testimonials from schools that have enjoyed his live presentation. Unfortunately, Peter is slowing down his Antarctica school talks as he is dedicating more and more time to his many Environment and Sustainability projects.

"Fantastic, well prepared, great slide show - very knowledgeable. Great links between history, geography, environment and inspiration. The students were engaged and the staff were impressed!"
- Kerry Sidaway, Western Heights College

"Very impressed! Peter was enthusiastic and informative and our students responded well to his presentation."
- Bernice Ryan, Our Lady of Mercy College

"Thank you for giving up your time to talk to us about your many experiences around Antarctica. We loved how you came in your Antarctic outfit to show us what it is really like. Your photos also showed us what it is really like in Antarctica. When we are older we wish to be just like you and visit Antarctica."
- Students from Park Ridge Primary School

"Peter's visit has generated the most positive discussion by students and staff we have experienced ever after a visiting speaker. One student commented "I thought it was going to be boring, but it wasn't - it was great'."
